MU | N o t e s Profile Garry Hamilton ’85 Social work graduate named Fort Wayne police chief G arry Hamilton, a 1985 Manchester graduate, became police chief for the city of Fort Wayne on Jan. 1, 2014. He is the first African-American to hold the position. A social work major and criminal justice minor at Manchester, Hamilton has served on MU’s Social Work Program Advisory Council since 2007. He is a past caseworker for Allen County Child Protective Services. “Garry is an experienced, disciplined professional with the leadership skills and integrity that I was looking for in a police chief,” said Mayor Tom Henry, who appointed Hamilton. “He’s an excellent communicator and is respected by his peers and the community.” 1990s Beth A. Mathia ’90x Taylor of Granger, Ind., died June 17, 2013. Darrell Clase ’91 of West Lafayette, Ind., has been named director of emergency medical services for Tippecanoe County. Darrell also is on the consortium faculty at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind., and directs the associate of science paramedic training program. Andy McClain ’91 of Fort Wayne, Ind., is employed by Northern Wells Community Schools and is head coach of the 2013 3A state baseball champions of Norwell High School. Jamie Branyan ’99 of Trumbull, Conn., has been promoted to director of annuities and product management at Prudential Annuities. 2000s Brian Hartz ’00 of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is the associate editor for Southern Boating magazine, the south’s largest boating magazine. David Hutchinson ’00x of Spencer, Ind., died Dec. 21, 2013. Hamilton has been with the Fort Wayne Police Department since 1994. Most recently, he served as deputy chief of the city’s northeast quadrant, liaison officer to the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, captain of the southeast quadrant, and sergeant in internal affairs. “We want to be an accessible and approachable department that values neighborhoods and a great quality of life,” Hamilton said. As chief, he will work on a strategic plan to address homicides and other crime in Fort Wayne, and focus on communication with neighborhoods and businesses. Mark Heiden ’01 of Franklin, Ind., graduated from Ball State University in December 2013 with a Specialist of Education Ed.S. degree in school superintendency. He works as a principal for Franklin Community Schools. Kristin Morris ’02 and Spencer Folkerts of Fort Wayne, Ind., welcomed son Bailey Matthew on Sept. 30, 2013. Kristin is a quality assurance specialist with Aging and In-Home Services of Northeast Indiana Inc. Carlos E. Reyes ’02 and Karen Acevedo Knauth both of Managua, Nicaragua, married in Managua on Mar. 29, 2014. Aaron Griffin ’03 of Pendleton, Ind., died Jan. 23, 2014. Lisa Updike ’03 of Fort Wayne, Ind., was recognized as a Rising Star in the areas of bankruptcy, creditor and debtor rights, and business and corporate law, and appears in the March issue of Indiana Super Lawyers magazine.
