MEDICAL RESIDENTS
More than 200 residents and fellows gathered on
Thursday, June 30, at the University of Louisville
School of Medicine campus to begin their careers
as physicians.
The 2016 resident and fellow orientation began
with a welcome from GLMS President and UofL
Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education
John Roberts, MD, who encouraged the young
physicians in attendance to use their next few
years wisely.

“You’re perhaps in a new city, entering a new residency or fellowship. There’s a lot on your plate, I
understand that, but there is value in your local,
state and national medical societies. They might
give you a key advantage among your peers and
they can also give a sense of belonging.”
Following the orientation, approximately 100
residents and fellows became members of GLMS
“It’s time for you to start developing your professional identity as a physician. How will you be
seen by your peers, nurses, therapists and lab
people? At the end of your training, how are you
going to make yourself look different in a positive
way?” he asked, touching on the goals each resident should consider as they take on some of the
most difficult but rewarding years of their lives.
“You need to be knowledgable. You need to know
your specialty. Your job over the next few years is
your education,” said Dr. Roberts. “Be proactive
so you feel comfortable. Over the next few years,
you’ll be fatigued and stressed, but you need to
be calm, smile and take your time.”
Dr. Roberts was the first of several highly esteemed physicians to welcome the new residents.
Norton Hospital Medical Director Henry Walter,
MD, and Jewish Hospital CMO Jeff Goldberg,
MD, both introduced themselves and their hospital systems. Gordon Strauss, MD, spoke to
the group about Campus Mental Health Services
and what Louisville has to offer. KMA Board Chair
Randy Schrodt, MD, encouraged the audience
to become involved in organized medicine both
through the Kentucky Medical Association and
GLMS.
