Livingston Middle School is an Exciting Place to Learn and Teach
Middle school years are perhaps some of the most important formative years in a students ’ K-8 education . The Livingston Middle School offers students many opportunities to enhance their middle school experience . Programs are designed to promote academic excellence , tap student ’ s creative sides , promote positive social skills development as well as enrich their overall middle school experience . Here are a few of the extended learning opportunities available for students :.
� MUSIC PROGRAM — All 6-8th grade students have the opportunity to participate in a music elective . Options include : Guitar , Choir , Color Guard , and Band .
ATHLETICS PROGRAM — All 6-8th grade students have the opportunity to participate in various school-sponsored sports . Students compete against other schools throughout Merced County and Central Valley area . Sports include : soccer , volleyball , cross country , basketball , wrestling , track , and softball / baseball .
OUTDOOR EDUCATION — Every year , sixth grade students are provided with a five-day hands-on learning opportunity at Camp Green Meadows located just outside Yosemite . The camp experience extends learning outside the classroom to the California landscape . The outdoor education curriculum is strongly science-based and aligned to Common Core State Standards . Livingston has the longest running camp attendance record in the county , having participated in the camp for 51 continuous years .
CHALLENGE DAY — Each year two-hundred 8th grade students participate in the Challenge Day program . This one-day experience is a highly interactive process that pairs students with adults to explore positive social behavior and social justice issues , while engaging in exercises that promote tolerance and self-awareness .
( AVID ) Advancement Via individual Determination — This program encourages and prepares students to attend college . The learning and study strategies utilized in the AVID program assist students in developing the skills necessary to navigate their high school and college classes with confidence and success . AVID is offered to 7-8th grade students , however , staff was also able to offer a 6th grade AVID elective .
FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE
A partnership with Livingston High School students to mentor LMS students to help pave the way for a successful high school experience . ——————————

Livingston Schools are leading bilitercy instruction in Merced County ! LUSD is implementing a 50 / 50 simultaneous model in which both languages are developed at the same time . Spanish instruction is delivered by a Spanish bilingual teacher and English instruction is delivered by an English speaking teacher . In Kindergarten , language arts is taught in the child ' s primary language . In first grade the language of instruction is alternated every three days . In 2nd — 6th grade , the language of instruction is alternated approximately every other week . In 7th grade students receive Spanish instruction in science and a Spanish language , literature / culture class . Likewise , in grade 8 students receive Spanish instruction in the Spanish language , literature / culture class and in history .
Students enrolled in the Dual Language Academy ( DLA ) have the option of applying for the ― Bi-Literacy Award .‖ This requires the students to pass rigorous oral and written exams in both English and Spanish . About 10 % of students participating in the DLA program at eighth grade are able to pass the rigorous tests . According to information provided by the Livingston High School , all students who received the bi-literacy award in 8th grade ( Class of 2014 ) passed an advanced placement , college level , Spanish class during their sophomore year in high school .
