The definitive enchilada cookbook, coming right up!
For nearly 18 years, Sylvia Casares has lovingly
prepared and served the traditional Tex-Mex of her
native Brownsville at Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen, with
three locations in Houston. With her passion for the
humble enchilada, fans began calling her the
Enchilada Queen soon after she opened the first
Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen in 1998. There are 18
varieties of made-from-scratch enchiladas on her
menu, as well as enchilada tours that offer four varieties on a single plate
Currently, Casares is putting the finishing touches
on her first cookbook, The Enchilada Queen
Cookbook: Enchiladas, Fajitas, Tamales and More
Classic Recipes from Texas-Mexico Border Kitchens,
which will be publish in November 2016 by St.
Martin’s Press.

A Diverse Festival Season
Our multicultural city is celebrating the best of Africa and Greece in October. On October 8,
from 11am to 8pm, the Nigerian American Multicultural Council is planning their fourth annual
Afrifest in collaboration with other African countries on the grounds of the Houston Baptist
University campus. The event will feature special live music and performances, food and exceptional ethnic cuisines of different African countries, cultural artwork, country displays, fashion
shows, games and kids’ activities.
Across town at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church is the 50th Annual Greek Festival
taking place October 6–9. All the food is homemade and delicious, the wine flows and the
dancing and cultural performances can’t be beat. This is a Montrose tradition you don’t want
to miss.
