Tune In | MECA Showcases Veracruz Music Culture Opening January 13 ! Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts ( MECA ) is hosting a solo exhibition of the accomplished Mexican-Canadian artist , musician and ethnographer Alec Dempster , Jarocho Impressions : Musical Motives from Southern Veracruz . Centered around more than 40 prints from Dempster ’ s two linocut series — Rostros del son jarocho ( 2005 ) and Lotería jarocha ( 2013 ), the exhibition weaves together images and sounds of the people and narratives of son jarocho , a musical and dance tradition from the Sotavento , the southern regions of Mexico ’ s Veracruz state . It is free and open to the public , Monday – Friday , 12 – 7pm . MECA will also host a gallery talk and closing reception on Friday , February 24 , 6 – 8pm . www . meca-houston . org
Greatness Through Diversity Progress Marches On This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the MLK Grande Parade , to be held January 16 at 10am . More than 300,000 spectators are expected , with a viewing audience in excess of four million people . The theme this year is “ Committed to Excellence in Community Service .”
The MLK Grande Parade is the third-largest parade in the U . S ., behind the Rose Parade and the Macy ’ s Thanksgiving Day Parade . It features 15 floats and 30 marching bands from all segments of the Greater Houston community and will originate in Midtown at San Jacinto and Elgin Streets near Houston Community College . www . mlkgrandeparade . org
