For more than 20 years , Rice University Art Gallery has been the only university gallery in the nation devoted to commissioning sitespecific installation art . On February 9 , Rice Gallery will come full circle by reinstalling one of its earliest installations , Sol LeWitt ' s Glossy and Flat Black Squares ( Wall Drawing # 813 ), 1997 as its closing exhibition of the school year . LeWitt ( 1928 – 2007 ), a leading figure in minimalism and pioneer of conceptual art , created the majestic work in response to Rice Gallery ’ s architectural space .
