Probably most of you have driven by this perfectly beautiful neighborhood just off Loop 610. The early history of Meyerland, named
after the Meyer Family, was initiated around 1885 when JOSEPH F.
MEYER started purchasing land in southwest Houston, eventually
accumulating 6,000 acres. At Joseph’s death in 1933 his land was
divided among his three sons, which eventually led to his son
GEORGE developing 1,200 acres in 1955 into today’s Meyerland.

schools in Houston including Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts
Middle School (formerly Johnston Middle School) and Bellaire High
School. Meyerland has commercial history also, with Kegg’s Candy
(established in 1946) and Los Tios Mexican Restaurant (established
in 1970 and home of the first frozen margarita in 1975), both part
of the 59 stores at Meyerland Plaza.
