People with disability are being encouraged to volunteer overseas following the establishment of a Disability Inclusion Community of Practice , involving volunteer organisations from across the globe .
Spearheaded by Australian international development and education company Scope Global , the Community of Practice aims to increase the number of people with disability who participate in and benefit from international volunteering opportunities .
“ This will strengthen cooperation and lessons learnt amongst volunteer coordinating organisations and enable us to contribute to the global body of knowledge on the value of inclusive international volunteering ,” says Anthony Rologas from Scope Global .
The initiative was inspired by the success of a group of five Australian volunteers with disabilities , including Triple J ’ s Nas Campanella , who spent a month working with disabled people ’ s organisations in Fiji

The five volunteers , who travelled with the Disability Empowerment Skills Exchange - part of the Australian Volunteers for International Development ( AVID ) program - shared knowledge and experience in media and public relations , financial management , disability inclusion and community engagement .
“ Scope Global has been working to ensure people with disability can access , benefit and contribute to the development of their communities on an equal basis to others ,” says Anthony .
The community of practice aims to support organisations to target people with disabilities in development initiatives designed specifically to benefit other people with disabilities . It will also support organisations to actively include people with disabilities as participants and beneficiaries of development efforts across all sectors .
