An innovative housing development for people with disability has been opened in Ringwood , Victoria , by EACH Housing .
Touted as one of the first of its kind in Australia , the development incorporates six apartments , specially designed to allow people with significant physical limitations to live independently whilst sharing the additional support they each require .
Support needs for the tenants are being coordinated by Independent Disability Services ( IDS ), EACH Housing ’ s partner in this project .
CEO of EACH Housing Peter Ruzyla said EACH was thrilled to have welcomed the tenants to their new homes .
“ This is an important step forward in the provision of appropriate disability housing and we are looking forward to being able to undertake further projects ,” Peter said .
“ This development is in response to a clear need in the community for age and living appropriate housing . In contrast to the clinical feel of so many social housing developments , EACH Housing strives to design and build developments that provide independence , dignity , choice and community connection for its residents – basic human rights so often lacking in shared accommodation .”
The Ringwood development , supported by a grant from the Federal Government through the Supported Accommodation Innovation Fund , with land and other funding provided by EACH , provides residents with their own self-contained unit with a kitchen , bathroom , double bedroom , living / dining area and laundry .
Six residents of varying high level physical limitations recently moved into the development , including Caz , in her 30s . Having moved five times in six years in search of accommodation that was not
