FROM THE EDITOR

SPRING IS ONLY A FEW SHORT WEEKS AWAY , and we at Lethbridge living , disappointed by the province ’ s weather prognosticator ’ s prediction of six more weeks of winter back on Groundhog Day in February , have decided it ’ s high time for Lethbridge to get its own weather-predicting rodent . Move over Balzac Billy – we ’ re interviewing for a new ground squirrel . But more on that later in the year .
We all know that this year is a big year for Canada , and we ’ re seeing all sorts of events being planned for the 150th celebration of Canada ’ s Confederation . People and groups throughout our city , province , and country are finding ways to celebrate this event , and this issue we highlight the Lethbridge Sport Council ’ s initiative that celebrates Canada ’ s sesquicentennial : Get Active Through Sport ( p . 20 ). Through this initiative , residents are invited to try a new sport , share their stories , volunteer for a sporting event , or get out and cheer on local athletes . Individuals can also celebrate our country ’ s 150th by achieving personal goals , such as finally climbing the stairs up from the river bottom – let Jay Herrington be your inspiration ( p . 42 )!
Another more sombre anniversary , that of the Battle of Vimy Ridge , will also be honoured in 2017 . One hundred years ago , Canadian troops won a decisive battle that led to victory in World War I , but at great cost in lives lost and soldiers wounded . We honour the memories of those who fought so bravely , mourn for the losses of those who lost loved ones , and ponder the profound effects of war in Belinda Crowson ’ s article this issue ( p . 36 ).
As we move into spring and the warmer weather , and we ’ ve certainly seen some spurts of that throughout the winter , our thoughts will start turning towards spring cleaning , yard work , and home improvement projects .
For advertisers , now ’ s the time to do a little spring cleaning on ad campaigns , and refresh what you ’ re doing . It ’ s always good to take a step back and review the past year of advertising , and ask yourself some key questions :
• Are your ads focussed on your customer ? It ’ s important to concentrate your advertising efforts on what your customer wants to hear .
• Are you highlighting what ’ s different and special about your business ? Focus on what you ’ re doing in the marketplace that makes you stand out from the competition .
• Are you consistently advertising and staying top of mind ? Consistent and regular advertising ensures you ’ re the first one that comes to mind when someone needs your services .
Remember , just like the gardens and flowers we ’ re going to start planting soon , your advertising and marketing also need to be cultivated and nurtured for your business to grow . And if you ’ re looking for some advice , give us a call , and we can give you a hand .
Thanks for reading , and happy spring !
