Today , its 40 to 50 members are a dedicated band of skilled musicians who enjoy opportunities to play and find challenge in their programmes .
Alongside the Gold Band , the Silver Band , formed for intermediate or “ rusty ” musicians who wanted to perform less technical works , shares a similar history of award-winning performances and heart-warming appearances at various local events . A roster of conductors , including Ken Rogers , Dennis Orr , Betty Upton , Karen Christie , and Sam Yamamoto , have directed the Silver Band on numerous stages across Alberta .
Opportunities for Lethbridge audiences to experience the Gold and Silver Bands , as well as its brass ensemble , happen throughout the year , and are a source of pride for the Society . “ Our annual Mayor ’ s Concert , held during the Christmas season , benefits our local food banks ,” says René . “ We also perform at Canada Day ceremonies , Remembrance Day ceremonies , and over the past four years we ’ ve hosted Tuba Christmas at Casa .” Other concerts include an annual Halloween concert , and of course , the Spring Concert , which this year will mark the Society ’ s 30th Anniversary with a very special guest . “ The Crooner Show , on April 8 , will feature Michael Vanhevel , a talented vocalist . We will feature music by Frank Sinatra , Dean Martin , and other famous crooners ,” says René . “ The music for this concert was arranged by Howard Cable , and was one of his last pieces he ever wrote . It will be an honour to feature his work for this important concert .”
As the Lethbridge Community Band Society looks forward to another 30 years , plans include more touring and performance opportunities . “ We look forward to being present for community celebrations and events , and we are hopeful that someday soon we can perform at a new performing arts centre ,” says René .
“ The Lethbridge Community Band Society exists because of its many friendships and deep relationships with its members , volunteers and musicians . We love our organization and we love the music ,” René adds . “ Putting on our concerts and organizing our events is a lot of work , but we do it with great pride and purpose . By providing live band music to our community , we know we are an integral part of our vibrant arts community .”
