Former Olympian Named
Lehman Track Coach
Joel Phillip, a former Olympian who participated in the 2008
Beijing Olympic Games, is Lehman’s newest men’s and women’s
track/field and cross country head coach. A three-time national
champion and five-time All-American, he represented Grenada
in Beijing. “It feels great to be the new head coach at Lehman
College,” said Phillip, who served as sprints/jump coach for
Columbia University in 2011 and 2012. “Being a head coach was
always a goal of mine and I am excited to lead this program.”

Three Lehman Students Head to Japan on JASSO Scholarships
When Shanik Vazquez was in middle school, she discovered a love of animé. Next came an interest in manga (Japanese comics), as well
as Japanese pop music. Many teens would be satisfied that their entertainment tastes crossed borders, but Vazquez wanted to know more.
“I was interested in the culture, not just the superficial stuff, but the customs and values,” she said. So when she entered Lehman College in
2013, Vazquez enrolled in a Japanese beginner’s language class. Four semesters of language study later, the junior is spending the Fall 2015
semester at Japan’s Sugiyama Jogakuen University along with her fellow students Ruby Cabuya and Krystal Garcia.
