History on the Go : Historic Fort Snelling
Hear the stories and discover the history of Fort Snelling , the stone fort that was built in the 1820s at the junction of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers . Step back in time beginning with an informational fi lm and refreshments in the Visitor Center . Browse the exhibits and visit the gift shop before boarding the coach for a guided , rolling tour of the 19th century fort and the “ Upper Post ” where soldiers were stationed during the 20th century .
Enjoy a brief visit inside the Commandant ’ s House , the oldest house in Minnesota . Lunch follows the tour at the Cherokee Tavern ( formerly known as Casper ’ s Cherokee Sirloin Room ). Enjoy a sirloin steak lunch with a tossed salad , baked potato , rolls , beverage and dessert . An optional chicken entree may be pre-ordered , please indicate when registering .
The tour leaves Gladstone ( 1945 Manton St , Maplewood 55109 ) at 9:15 am and returns to the same location at approximately 2:15 pm Fee includes transportation in a deluxe motor coach , lunch ( includes tax and tip ), admission to Fort Snelling and tour escort . Step back in time and experience the exquisite 33-room Turnblad Mansion , beautifully decorated for the holidays , and the American Swedish Institute . This guided tour provides a close-up look at detailed wood carvings , sculpted ceilings and hand-crafted Swedish tile stoves plus facts and history of the fascinating Turnblad family , the art and architecture of the mansion and the history of early Minneapolis . Twenty-one years after completion of the mansion , the family gave it to the community , founding the museum and cultural center that would become the American Swedish Institute .
