PHILODENDRON BIPINNATIFIDUM : This species is a popular choice in commerical spaces .
a prime candidate for interior planting ; its succulent , light green stems and oval leaves form a dense mound when grown in a pot in a semi-shaded position .
Exotic plants make up the bulk of this quarter ’ s Plant Schedule . The popularity of exotics as house plants can be traced back to the Victorian ‘ golden age ’ of international plant hunters , and to this day non-native species dominate interior planting design . Aspidistra elatior is a true classic ; known as the ‘ cast iron plant ’ due to its ability to withstand neglect , it provides broad , lush foliage year-round in a variety of indoor growing conditions . Ceropegia woodii is an old world plant with many modern fans , its dainty strings of kidney-shaped foliage will hang up to 4 metres beyond its basket or pot , providing an elegant ‘ veil ’ on an intimate scale . Epipremnum aureus is a large tropical vine from Mo ’ orea , it suckering stems carry masses of lush , golden-green leaves and will cling to a suitably strong structure – definitely one for a big indoor space . The Hoya genus contains several vine species which are well suited to indoor cultivation ; their glossy leaves and waxy , long-lived flowers make them an excellent hanging basket specimen . Rhipsalis baccifera is another hanging basket star ; its finely draping succulent stems make it one of the most sought-after cacti for interior planting in the home or office . Whether through native experimentation or exotic exploration , on scales large and small , interior planting design represents a great opportunity for landscape architects to showcase their specialised knowledge .
