NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

“ IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES , IT WAS THE WORST OF TIMES ...” The opening lines of A Tale of Two Cities are singularly applicable to New Zealand ’ s landscape architecture community over the past few months .
On 21 November , a New Zealand project was hailed as the best in the world at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin .
Kopupaka Reserve by Isthmus Group was named World Landscape of the Year 2016 . This hybrid park , in which a stormwater reserve has been combined with an urban park , playground and skate park , was made possible by dovetailing the masterplanning of the streets with the green infrastructure of the reserve .
At the same event , the celebrated bright pink Te Ara I Whiti cycleway was the winner of the Completed Buildings Transport category . Designed by Monk McKenzie Architects and LandLab , Te Ara I Whiti has already picked up several national awards .
But only a week previously , just after midnight on 14 November , Kaikoura was rocked by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake . Ruptures occurred on multiple fault lines , the town of Kaikoura was cut off for over two weeks , and the after-effects continue today from North Canterbury to Wellington .
This issue brings you first-hand accounts from Henry Crothers and Leicester Murray on both of these events .
There is , perhaps , a sense of resolution to be found in these pages , as well . Another project , the Margaret Mahy Family Playground in Christchurch , rose from a site bordered by the Avon River in the central city that was devastated in the 2011 Earthquake . Today , it is an award-winning example of community-centred design and renewal .
