texture . I enjoy the close attention and meditative handiwork that are part of the process . The compositional foundations of my works include improvised , intuitive gestures as well as schemes that come from tracings or rubbings of surfaces . Usually I will start with a scheme that originates from a found source and then elaborate on it . The paintings are built very slowly , though ; what might look like a quick gesture is made of countless , repetitive layers . I like the contradiction that might exist in the work : that slow and deliberate marks accumulate to impart an impression of fluidity .
