Stephen Ross is the Owner and Executive Chef at Mortar and Pestle. After graduating from Purdue University, he went to the The Culinary Institute of America. While working under Bruce Sherman at North Pond, he learned an appreciation for local ingredients and seasonality. After deciding to make Chicago his home, Stephen started his culinary experience at Custom House, moving on to Table 52, then refining his culinary repertoire at NoMI. Mortar & Pestle was the recipient of the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Best New Restaurant’ award for 2016. Stephen Paul, Chef de Cuisine, was born and raised in St. Louis where he began his career in the restaurant industry before moving to Chicago. He started working at Sur La Tab as the Assistant Culinary Coordinator. Later on, he was introduced to Chef Art Smith, who took him along to help open Table 52. While working for Art, Stephen cooked for several important people including; Oprah Winfrey, Paula Dean and President Obama. After meeting Stephen Ross, the two Stephens began forming their brainchild: Mortar & Pestle.
