The Gym: Trial & Error
For so many people, the hardest part of exercise is just
knowing what to do and how to get started. There are so
many options out there when it comes to gyms and types
of exercise and it can certainly be overwhelming. Running,
cycling, weightlifting and cardio classes, personal training and
group fitness, how much and how often? This can all seem too
daunting and honestly, too many hours at the gym. As long as
your workouts are good quality workouts, you really only need
an hour a day, 3-5 days per week. But where should you go?

EXPERTS
The most effective way to decide what is going to work best for
you is to try each gym out. Whether it’s a big box gym, yoga
studio or Crossfit box, most will offer a free trial class or day
pass to check it out. So much of your decision will come down
to your preference on group or individual training. If you are
really uncomfortable in a room full of people, then try out a
big box gym where you can seek out personal training.
Ask to meet with a couple of the trainers (this is almost
always free) for a consultation. This will allow you to see if
you connect well with the trainers. The downside to personal
training is most certainly the expense. A typical one hour
training session is anywhere from $50-$75 per hour; which
can add up. Without the personal trainer however, the big
box gym can be very overwhelming when you aren’t sure how
to use the equipment or exactly how to set up your workout
routine each week. This is when something like Crossfit can be
very beneficial.
Most crossift gyms are around $150/month which includes
unlimited classes with certified coaches. Every class is
structured, programmed and taught by experienced coaches
that will guide you through the movements everyday and tailor
the workouts to your ability level and movement capabilities.
You do not have to figure out what you are going to do everyday
nor do you have to pay to get personal training. There is always
a coach right there with you every class. You just show up and
do the work and they will do all the thinking! The energy and
support that you receive from your fellow athletes is pretty
amazing as well. That being said, it can be a high energy and
intense environment, which is not for everybody.
In addition to the regular classes, many gyms offer yoga, kids
classes, and other athletic opportunities. Always be sure to
choose the gym with the options that fit best with your lifestyle
and goals.
A little research goes a long way. Just search your local gyms
and check them out. You are bound to find the right fit.
So, don’t be afraid, get out there and get after it! Whatever
you decide to do, just get your body moving. Go for a hike,
go skiing, go to the gym, go for a walk. You will feel so much
better when you do.
