Satellite Camp . Currently , there are 214 employees at the Penitentiary . In early October of 2016 , Senator Dick Durbin reported that over half the employees are from the local area . It is expected that as many as 1,000 additional jobs will be created when the facility is fully operational in late 2017 . Durbin also said that $ 14 million has been invested in the facility as preparations are made to accommodate an additional 2,000 federal inmates . State officials estimate that the annual operation of the facility will generate more than $ 122 million in operating expenditures , including $ 61 million in local business sales . In addition to the success associated with business development , President Dittmar and the Village Board have also worked to encourage , support , and help sponsor special community events and activities . Friday ’ s Farmers ’ Market , Main Street ’ s summer Adopt a Pot , the Midwest Garlic Festival , Spring Fling , the Elizabeth Community Fair and Parade , Music in the Park , the Scarecrow Festival , and Christmas in Elizabeth provide opportunities for Elizabeth residents and visitors to experience the food , fun , and fellowship that define the Village . Over 4,000 people were on hand for the community fair in July and nearly 3,000 people from around the region enjoyed the Midwest Garlic Festival in August . That ’ s great exposure ! It should come as no surprise that Elizabeth is a recipient of the Governor ’ s Hometown Award . The Awards are presented to recognize volunteers across the state for the work they do to improve their communities . The Award recipients are selected based on factors that include local need , volunteer participation , use of resources and results achieved . The Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity administers the awards that are presented in six population divisions and six project categories . The Village of Elizabeth was the 2010 recipient of the Governor ’ s Hometown Award in the category of history and historic projects . The plaque reads , “ In recognition of Outstanding Achievements to make ILLINOIS an Ideal State in which to Work , Live and Conduct Business .” Mike Dittmar will run for re-election this April . After eight years of hard work , creative problem solving , and selfless dedication to the town he so obviously loves , here ’ s hoping he ’ s at the helm when the kernel pops … for surely it will ! ❖
