Johanna gets the lowdown on the people behind our favourite garments...
You know when you see a gorgeous 20s
dress and then look at the price tag and just
want to weep? Sure, Judy’s fairs are the best
place to head when craving for affordable
vintage but at times it just so happens that
someone already walked out with your dream
item in hand. Don’t we all then wish we could
sit behind a sewing machine and make magic
happen on our own? Rita Raud (modelling
left) is a girl who has this elusive talent.
As soon as someone mentions being
a fashion student, I immediately feel a
considerable amount of respect but also a
little pity towards them. Having a couple of
friends tackling that challenge has made
it clear that the Valentinos and Yves Saint
Laurens are not born, they are made quite
literally with blood, sweat and tears. It is a
very rewarding process, however, and one
major lesson in it is learned through being
a fashion intern. Rita, a fourth and final year
design student, spent her summer sewing
away at Kissing in Traffic, a little boutique
in Stoke Newington in London. She told me
about her experience and was happy to
share some wisdom ͡
