Joseph Brant Hospital Annual Report | Page 5

Message from the President and CEO
Every day , we are proud of our hospital ’ s continued efforts to provide exceptional care to our patients and their families . There is a growing sense of excitement as we watch the new Patient Tower being built , which will provide a state-of-the-art hospital for our community . As we build a new building for our future , we are also building our hospital ’ s structures and processes , to ensure we continue to meet the needs of our patients as they continue to evolve with the ever-present changes in healthcare .
This year our hospital focused on our people , our processes and workflows in getting ready to move into the New Tower in the Fall of 2017 .
Our Emergency Department team has done exceptional work this year in creating a new model of care that has decreased wait times by 39 % for patients waiting to move into an inpatient bed . The improvements our hospital has made have been recognized by the Province – in January , JBH was recognized as the most improved Medium-Volume Community Hospital Group . Across the hospital , our staff , physicians and leadership are focused on enhancing care for our patients , highlighted throughout the pages of this report .
We welcomed four new members to our Senior Team : Susan Wannamaker , Senior Vice President ; Cheryl Williams , Vice President Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Executive ; Nancy Casselman , Vice President Human Resources ; Dee Perera , Vice President Finance & Corporate Support Services and Chief Financial Officer . Their expertise and leadership will contribute to the hospital ’ s strategic vision , best practices and processes especially as we prepare to open our new hospital Patient Tower in the coming year .
JBH has had 6 consecutive years of balanced budgets since 2009 / 2010 . Despite our best efforts and good fiscal management for the year 2015 / 16 , JBH will end the year with a slight deficit of $ 428,000 , which represents 0.28 % of total Hospital revenues . JBH , like all hospitals across Ontario , have had several previous years of 0 % Ministry of Health funding increases , however in the same time period , JBH has encountered expense increases yearly of 1.4 % to 1.5 %, accounting for the small deficit . Moving forward , we are anticipating a balanced budget for the upcoming year , as we project an increase in Ministry funding .
It is an exciting time to be a member of our JBH team . Thank you to our staff , physicians and volunteers , who give themselves each and every day to care for our patients and their families . We look forward to the year ahead as we continue to build and support a healthy future for our community .
A message from the Board Chair
The Board of Governors continues to focus on building for the future of the hospital . We come together to guide the leadership of the organization , working together to build long-lasting relationships , focusing on best practices and achieving the common goal of providing an exceptional hospital for our community .
The Board of Governors invested in a full Governance review this year , demonstrating JBH ’ s commitment to continuous improvement to achieve Governance excellence based on national best practices . The Governance review has led to new guidelines , efficiencies and innovative practices for our Board to follow in the years to come .
The Board provides oversight and stewardship to all areas of the hospital , including patient care as well as larger corporate projects . This year , the Board has focused on people and process through the lens of the Redevelopment Project and Operational Readiness . We strive to ensure our staff , physicians , patients and community , will provide and receive the best care possible . We acknowledge the countless hours that our staff are investing to ensure we are ready when the new Patient Tower opens .
In the fall , our Board of Governors , Senior Leadership Team , Medical Advisory Committee and Medical Staff Association came together to discuss the future , and the outcome was the formation of “ One Team ,” whose role is to provide a collaborative approach to leadership , direction and oversight . The first initiative of “ One Team ” is to assist with the development of a new 2016 strategic plan for JBH .
Together through the “ One Team ’ s ” leadership , the Board and participation from our staff , partners , patients and community members , we have started the process of developing the new strategic plan which will provide the road map for the hospital for the next three years . This work is expected to be completed in the fall of 2016 .
The Board partnering with the Auxiliary were proud to introduce the first annual Family and Friends Picnic , held last September at Confederation Park . There was a barbeque and family activities that encouraged all members of the JBH team and their families to enjoy time together outside of the work environment . I look forward to seeing familiar faces at the second picnic this summer .
After nine years on the Board , two years as Chair , I am concluding my term and stepping down from the position of Board Chair . I am proud of the contributions of the Board to the future of our hospital , especially as we enter the final stages of building our new Patient Tower . I welcome Kathryn Osborne as the incoming Board Chair , who acted as our Vice Chair this year . Thank you to my fellow colleagues on the Board for your dedication , hard work and support – it has been a privilege to work alongside you all .
