CONSTRUCTION MILESTONES FROM 2015-2016 16,000 pieces of equipment 301 sq ft private inpatient room 1,566 53,000 tonnes of concrete 600 window panels handwashing sinks 50 designated wheelchair spots in waiting rooms 600 types and sizes of storage carts Oxygen flowmeters for patient care 7 air handling units 3 generators Following Joseph Brant Hospital’s official groundbreaking event on March 30, 2015 for the patient care tower, construction has been continuously progressing. There are over 200 construction workers on site every day, with two cranes to support the materials needed to construct each level. Highlights from the year include: Once the foundation for the new tower was complete in July 2015, the tower quickly started to rise. On average, it took the EllisDon construction team three weeks to pour the concrete and form the columns for each level of the tower. In November, a man and material hoist was mounted to the tower – it’s an exterior elevator, affixed to the side of the building that transports construction workers and smaller materials. Inside the building, construction crews work on the installation and development of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and duct work as well as installing drywall to create the definition of each of the departments and rooms. Six elevator shafts and three stairwells have been made, with several more to go! project completed was the cistern installation - pouring the concrete for the base slab to support the cistern and then moving the cistern into place underground. In February, the last concrete was poured to create the top level of our new patient tower and the last two columns were formed and poured to support the future bridge that will connect the parking facility to the new tower. With the concrete work complete, the envelope of the building will be finished this spring, closing in all of the exterior walls. In March, the penthouse (the mechanical and electrical brain of the building) equipment was installed, with seven air handling units, three generators, seven boilers and three chillers to support the daily functioning of the building. This past year, EllisDon constructed many essential components of the project that may not be visible when looking at the project from behind the construction fencing, but are essential for the functioning of the building. A significant MOCK-UP ROOMS Last December, we celebrated the opening of our Mock-Up Rooms - five different rooms that will mirror the patient experience we will achieve in our new hospital. Hundreds of staff, volunteers, physicians, members of our community and community leaders have had a firsthand look at the new state-of-the-art technology and design elements as they toured through a Patient Room, Emergency Department Exam Room, Trauma Resuscitation Room, Intensive Care Unit Room and an Operating Room. Through open houses, guests have had the opportunity to ask questions and give their feedback on the design. These rooms will continue to be used to showcase the new design and as we get closer to opening, staff will prepare for working in the new rooms by practicing their roles in these spaces. Hundreds of staff, volunteers, physicians, community members and leaders have explored the design of our new patient rooms. Annual Report 2015-2016 15
