Speaking publicly about your services has a profound effect on the listeners: First of all people who speak well in public are considered more intelligent than the rest of us. There is something about standing on a stage and speaking with confidence. In the mind of the listener, it positions you as an expert in your field and that’s what you want. You need to be seen as the ‘go to’ person in your industry. It also saves you a lot of time. Imagine if you had a room full of 200 people and you had to pitch to each of them individually. First of all it would take time to set up meetings, get their contact details that’s (if they are willing to give it to you) and then impress them on an individual basis. But once they’ve all heard you speak, you have already jumped over many of those hurdles. DEAL WITH BAD HABITS Laziness & entrepreneurship do not go together. Successful entrepreneurs have certain character traits that you must develop if you want to succeed in business. One of them is the ability to work hard. If you are an employee and you think you work too hard, when you start to work for yourself, I guarantee that you will work 10 times harder! Running a business and being lazy just do not go together! 2 Also, If you also have a tendency to procrastinate, you need to deal with that. I define procrastination as ‘waiting to do next week what you should have done last month!’ This is important because a lot of businesses, (particularly professional services), require strict deadlines, and non- adherence to those deadlines can cost you dearly. For instance, not filing your income tax with HMRC on time attracts a monetary fine, (which increases the greater the delay)! Bottom line, learn how to manage your time, prioritise & be disciplined. Do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. LEARN TO MULTI- TASK When you are employed, you are pretty much spoon fed. If your wage slip is late, you pop down to the accounts department and they sort it out for you. If your computer screen suddenly goes blank, you pick up the phone and call IT support and they sort it out for you. When you are self-employed, particularly in the beginning, you have to wear a lot of hats, so don’t be put off. 3 JASMINE'S PLACE 37 37
