Inspiration equals Janet Jackson

by Elaine Flores

Inspiration: A feeling of enthusiasm that you get from someone or something which gives you new and creative ideas. That’s the typical definition given when you look it up. I think it goes beyond that though. It’s everywhere and often unexpected. It can come on slowly through the years or at a moments notice. A glimpse of hope that is handed to you without any expectations. What you choose to do with it is up to you.

So let’s think for a moment. What inspires us? God, our parents, family, friends maybe even a stranger. Sometimes that inspiration may leave us as quickly as it came. You may not even notice that it was ever there. Well what about the times when you’re inspired from a young age and it becomes a blueprint for how you live your own life. True I’ve been inspired by many people and things throughout my life as I’m sure we all have. But this inspiration is obviously going to focus on a woman by the name of Janet Jackson. “Get the point? Good, let’s dance.”

It seems as if her name should be synonymous with the word inspiration. Don’t you think? Look up the word and it should have her name right next to it. Inspiration equals Janet Jackson. She is a woman who has reinvented herself over and over again throughout the decades, but has still remained true to herself and her fans as is written in her book “True You.” By the way, I’m sure you’ve read it by now at least a few times. I’ve read it 3 times already and it’s funny because each time I read it I notice something that I missed before. For myself she’s helped me through everything from depression and heartache to celebration and friendship. She is a true mentor of how to deal with the ups and downs of life. I think because she admits to dealing with these same twists and turns in her own life. She doesn’t apologise for being human and she shows that no one is perfect. How is Janet Jackson an inspiration? I think we all could probably write a book on this alone. It’s evident she inspires through her music, dance, and style. She is the blueprint that many follow. This is shown across the board and around the world. You can see how relevant she is today just by watching the US Election. Her song, “Nasty” made a major comeback in the final presidential debate of 2016 when Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton a nasty woman. Suddenly you couldn’t go on social media without coming across a mashup or meme of her “Nasty” song. And we all were proud to go along for the ride.
