Vocal Health Do’s & Don’ts
W
hat’s worse than losing your
voice? As a singer, nothing! In
fact it is a tragedy of catastrophic
proportions when a singer loses their voice or
has difficulty singing in tune due to vocal
illness. We all hate to sound bad, but more
than this vocal illness will prevent us from
earning our keep, taking that dream gig or the
opportunity to showcase in front of someone
who can make a difference to our
career. For the most part vocal hea lth issues are
preventable. Voice professional, Katy Salt, tells
us what can go wrong with the voice and how
we can prevent it. In this regular column Katy
will address common issues and answer your
voice care questions.■

KATY SALT
WHO IS SHE? Katy initially trained as an actress, working as a
professional in the West End, repertory, TV and film for 10 years.
She then went on to retrain as a Speech and Language Therapist.
She is currently the Senior Voice Specialist at the Royal Surrey
Hospital, UK, where she runs the Voice Clinic helping professional
voice users and others who have been affected by voice issues.
