Eagle Scout Project Extensive service hours and service projects, along with living by the Scout Law: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. This is the life of a Boy Scout. John Wesley Waugh, a senior at Statesville High School, has had a long career in scouting. Joining as a cub in the 2nd grade, he said “I knew I wanted to be an Eagle right then. I wanted to be the first Waugh to attain the rank of Eagle.” To attain this level of award, a Scout completes the requirements as issued by the B.S.A. and is approved by a board of review. For his Eagle Scout project, John Wesley has planned and is constructing two Little Free Libraries. One of these two neighborhood structures will be built at Garfield Park and the other near the Bentley Center in Statesville. “I hope that it helps people to get the opportunity to read…that’s what Little Free Libraries do. They enhance education.” These libraries will be initially stocked by employees of Iredell-Statesville Schools and it is the hope of John Wesley that as neighbors borrow a book, they will put a book in for someone else. “I’m excited for these neighborhoods to get enjoyment out of these libraries,” he said. Looking forward to graduation in June of 2017, John Wesley hopes to pursue a career in communications and sports broadcasting. When asked about his scouting career he quickly responded “It’s an awesome opportunity. It gets harder as you get older but I’m so glad I did it.” The Statesville Community is glad you did it too, John Wesley.
