WWW.BEYONDFALLENMETAL.COM Story and Photography by Ken Jones While Scranton, Pennsylvania, is notorious for a lack of support for almost all original music--especially Heavy Metal-there is a haven for Metal at THE NEW PENNY BAR on this chilly Saturday night in April. Tonight, patrons inside are given a dose of face-melting Metal with a triple bill including BINGHAMTON’S RUINATION and Scranton’s own BEYOND FALLEN and THREATPOINT. Taking the stage after Ruination, Beyond Fallen immediately continues the assault on our neck muscles with the rifftastic track “Mask of Deception”, off 2005’s “Lost in the Shadows” CD. The crowd has begun to bang their heads in unison to this gripping song with blistering guitars and heavy groove. You know instantly that this is METAL at its finest, as you are swept up in this attack of double bass bombs, ripping riffs, deep groove--and a voice that stands above all that power; cutting through the onslaught and hitting you with a fury of sonic attack. Beyond Fallen are no strangers to this scene. Veterans since the release of their 2003 “Beyond Fallen” EP, they’ve had quite a storied career. They’ve toured extensively to support the EP and the three full albums released since then. After playing legendary open festivals such as the “Headbanger's Open Air Festival” in Germany, you couldn’t blame them for being lethargic for this smaller crowd--but that’s NOT Beyond Fallen. NO, not at all! They attacked this show as if it was one of the huge European festival shows they’ve played in the past. Even after an equipment failure, that would kill the momentum of any lesser band, Beyond Fallen stayed professional and when the problem was fixed, continued to kick our asses as if they’d never missed a beat.
