club manager came to tell us, “NO LAP DANCES in this club!” The Telemundo agent left early. The talent scout yelled at our band leader. It was a mess. We were so embarrassed. Rebecca: My very first gig when the bass player jumped in the air and hit me in the mouth with the back of his head. Connie: Once while performing with an ELVIS impersonator, I had a broken leg, impetigo on my face and a bad perm. I asked the stage manager, "How do I look?" She replied, "How are you supposed to look?" JB: What distracts you when you are performing for a crowd? Kana: Camera flash. People fighting. Rebecca: When the sound is not good, such as not being able to hear the monitors. Good sound engineers are hard to find. Connie: I have been distracted by Rap music being played by a DJ in another area of the club. Or a rip-roaring bar brawl. JB: Take me through the process for writing a new song. Lyrics first? Music first? How does each of the band members contribute? Kana: There are many ways. In general, the bands I worked before, we were jamming to bring out ideas. While we were jamming, we recorded it and the band listened to it again and again and used parts we liked. UCB Rebecca is a great songwriter. We play her song and arrange with everyone. Rebecca: I really don't have a pattern so to speak. Sometimes I get an idea on a chorus or hook line. I will record it and save it. Other times I may come up with some lyrics and write them down. Somehow or another, they find their way together. I don't say, "Today I am going to write a song." It usually is an inspiration that motivates me to sit down and write about it. Connie: Rebecca is a genius. She will bring a melody and we find the essence of her idea's with her guidance. JB: How did you come up with the name “Undercover Betty”? If you had to change the band's name, what would it be? Kana: Connie made it. When I joined the band, they already had the name. Rebecca: Connie came up with it. So far, the name is working, so I would hate to say what we would change it to. That would take time. Connie: We were all in other bands when we formed this one. We did not want to upset the other players (all men) and I said we had to be “Undercover Betty's” in order to proceed without stepping on their toes. JB: Who would be your dream person or band to share the stage with? Why? Kana: There are so many bands and musicians, but I choose PAT BENATAR, SHEILA E, PINK, LADY GAGA, TOTO, STEVE PERRY, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS and more. I think their music and performances are very creative, but also very original. Rebecca: NEAL SCHON. His ability to make the guitar talk amazes me. He fits solos perfectly and tells a story with his melodies. Connie: I would love to share the stage with HEART. They have been and always will be an inspiration to me as a woman and an artist in this business. Their music and longevity inspire me deeply. JB: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Kana: Band. I work supporting society and being a great influence for people.
