The village is also home to the famous ‘Grottes du Pech Merle’ which is a cave system that has been discovered to house a series of 25,000-year old cave-paintings in addition to other vestiges from the ‘caveman’ era as well as many beautiful geological features, the remarkableness of these popular caves has recently led to this site, alongside the also popular medieval village of St Cirq Lapopie, being designated as a ‘Grand Site du Midi-Pyrenees’. The wider area continues to be a stunning and traditional part of France, the village is in between the larger medieval towns of Cahors and Figeac, and the area is popularly chosen as a detour by walkers on the Santiago de Compostella pilgrimage route as it is well-known for its natural beauty and stunning scenery. Cabrerets is close-by to the village of St Cirq Lapopie which has been officially designated one of the most beautiful villages in France, it is a picturesque village perched on a cliff, high above the River Lot, offering stunning views from the ruined 13th century chateau at the top .
