Finnish group Kesla is known for its
forestry machines: cranes, tractor
forest equipment, harvester heads
and, of course, chippers. These
drum chippers come in three size
classes, the C645, C860 and C1060,
which can be delivered as either
tractor or truck-powered or with
their own engine.
Two rotor-types are available
for the chippers. For brush-type
of logging waste material KESLA
recommends BrushCUT rotor with
angled knives. A LogCUT rotor is
recommended when material is
clean and chip quality and output
is a priority.
Chip output varies a great deal
depending on the power source,
infeed size, rotor-type and chipped
material. The Kesla C645 can
produce up to 160 m3 of wood
chips under the right conditions.
The C860 can easily make over 180
m3 and C1060 over 200 m3 of chips
in an hour.
The Kesla chipper frame is
made of strong steel with wall
thicknesses of 26-30 mm. This
results in good life-time expectancy
even when abrasive materials
are involved. Cleaning and
maintenance are easy and there
are a lot of changeable wear liner
parts.
The new LogCUT rotor was
introduced last year. It has not only
improved the chip quality but also
increased the output significantly,
especially with the bigger chippers.
The LogCUT rotor is available for all
Kesla chipper models.
The rotor has new types of
knives. The smallest rotor (570 mm
diameter) has six, 100 mm knives
evenly around the rotor. The bigger
(860 mm diameter) rotor for the
C860 has eight and the C1060 has
10, 200 mm knives fitted in four
rotor sectors.
The operator may change the
screens in five minutes depending
on the customer’s chip size
requirements. Chip chute rotates
360° and allows to thrust the
material to all directions. Chute
functions are usually controlled by
small joystick.
The chipper, loader and carrier
functions are steered by CanBus
connected ProCHIPPER steering
system. The operator has touch-
screen interface to control and
Kesla offers several versions of tractor powered chippers. In the photo single axle version with KESLA crane
adjust all hydraulic functions.
Infeed speed and aggressiveness
can be adjusted depending on the
chipped material and carrier power
supply. The system has also preset
values for logs, brush and whole
tree trunks. The display screen
also shows vital carrier data,
like engine rpm, temperature, oil
pressure and general warnings.
“It is worth remembering
that Kesla offers a wide variety
of cranes for handling energy
wood and CTL material,” the
manufacturer said.
“Loader cabins are designed
to meet the requirements of long
working days in dusty conditions.
