The JSU Drama Department will be presenting Blithe Spirit , a comedic play by Noel Coward , with shows starting at 7 pm from May 15 through 18 , and at 2 pm on Sunday , May 19 .
Coward claimed to have written the play over the course of five days , and meant for it to be a distraction for the people of Britain from the turmoil brought about by World War II . Coward ’ s home had been destroyed only recently , so it may have been a bit of a distraction for him personally , as well . That he turned it out in only five days is surprising , because the play is simple to follow , but surprisingly complex in the events that occur .
The play begins when acclaimed novelist Charles Condomine requests a séance to better understand the supernatural for his next novel . He reaches out to a medium , Madame Arcati , who joins him and his second wife , Ruth , for a pleasant dinner and a trip through the unknown .
Unfortunately , Arcati ’ s séance works a bit too well , as Elvira , the ghost of Charles ’ first wife , returns from the grave , drawn in by the medium at work . Upon seeing that he is remarried , she promptly goes about trying to destroy his marriage to Ruth as best she can .
Charles can see Elvira , but to Ruth , she is invisible , and that ’ s one of the interesting facets of the play : Elvira may be a ghost , but the actress playing her is not . So , while Charles is allowed to react to her , Ruth , and by extension the actress playing her , has to pretend that she just isn ’ t there .
As the play goes on , misunderstandings between Charles and Ruth and the machinations of Elvira grow and spin further out of control until Elvira sabotages the brakes of Charles ’ car in a bid to kill him , so they can be reunited beyond the veil .
Unfortunately , Ruth is the next person to drive the car .
The last half of the play , in which Charles is still haunted by Elvira , but Elvira is haunted by the newly deceased Ruth , is something that has to be seen ( or maybe divined via Ouija board ) to believe .
Tickets are available at the JSU box office , and can also be purchased before any of the performances . As the play isn ’ t a musical , the tickets are $ 10 for adults , $ 8 for JSU personnel and seniors $ 5 for JSU students and members of the military .
For any questions , call ahead to the box office at 256-782-5648 .
