charity Get In Shape And Give Back Exercising is great; raising money for charity is fantastic. Putting these two incredible things together, and it just might be the perfect partnership of giving (your time and your money) and getting (fitter and healthier). What’s not to love? In Sussex there are plenty of opportunities to get in shape and give back at the same time, for a variety of different charities. Whether you want to run, walk, swim, or try a combination of the lot, as long as you give it your best shot, and persuade friends, family, and work colleagues to sponsor you to do it, you – and the charitable organisations you are battling for – can ask for nothing more. The Mighty Hike MacMillan Cancer Support // 11 July Worthing Birdman Your Choice of Charity // 15 & 16 August You wanted a real challenge, and you’ve got one with this trek for MacMillan Cancer Research; it’s not called the Mighty Hike for nothing! This is a 26-mile walk from Brighton to Eastbourne, taking in the beautiful coastal paths of the South Downs Way National Trail, the Seven Sisters Country Park, and crossing Beachy Head, the highest chalk cliff in Britain. Lunch is included, as well as a hot meal to look forward to at the end. The Birdman is a flight competition for human powered flying machines. Yes, that’s right – this is all about raising money for charity by jumping off a pier (Worthing Pier) and attempting to fly using a creation of your very own. It’s fun for everyone, and there is a top prize of £10,000 if you manage to fly for 100 metres or more! There are three classes that you can enter: Leonardo Da Vinci class is for the serious competitors who have built an innovative and exceptional craft, and who aim to reach 100 metres or more; Condor Class is for those with modified hang gliders or other gliding craft; and finally, the Kingfisher Class. This is ideal for your fundraising goals, as it is for ‘fun flyers’, and the more entertaining you are, the more likely you are to win a prize. £25 registration fee + sponsorship www.macmillan.org.uk Sunset to Sunrise The British Heart Foundation // 18 July £25 entry fee + sponsorship www.worthingbirdman.co.uk This is a one-night challenge to walk 24 kilometres (14 and a bit miles) through the South Downs National Park to rais
