Ridgeview Wines
// www.ridgeview.co.uk
A summer’s day can be nicely
topped off with a cool, crisp
glass of sparkling wine, and
when it comes from a local
producer, it’s even better.
Founded in 1994 by Mike and
Chris Roberts, this vineyard is
dedicated to making world-class
sparkling wines – and judging by
the awards Ridgeview has won, it’s doing a good job. The business is
expanding, and with the popularity of sparkling English wine increasing
every day, the sky really does seem to be the limit! Fitzrovia Rosé, Blanc
de Blancs, and Ridgeview Cavendish are all available here.
Pear Tree Well // www.peartreewell.co.uk
Locally sourced
natural mineral
water that
comes directly
from the heart
of the Sussex
High Weald… it
sounds magical,
and it tastes
wonderful. This
water springs
from 120 feet
down, behind a
layer of rock that
is five feet thick.
It is pumped
straight from the well to the bottle, so its contact with the air is minimal
– perhaps as little as two seconds as the cap is fitted. This is water at its
most natural, pure and local and delicious to the last drop. This water is
perfectly safe to drink, and many also use it as a spray atomiser providing
them with unequalled water quality.
Folkington’s Juices // www.folkingtons.com
English fruit grown in Sussex (or as close as it can get, with as few food
miles between where it came
from and the end destination
of Arlington as possible) is the
ethos behind the juices made
by Folkington’s. By selecting the
perfect varieties, the juice made
here has provenance, and is
proving to be well loved. There
are eight different types to choose
from (or why not treat yourself
and try them all!) including cloudy
apple juice, pink lemonade,
mango juice, pear juice, and
tomato juice. The owner, Paul
Bendit, wanted to be an orchestra
conductor, but trained as an
accountant… we’re glad he went on to tastier, more refreshing things!
Kingscote Vineyard // www.kingscotevineyards.com
The technology used at Kingscote is top of the range and up to date,
but that doesn’t mean that the heart and soul has gone out of the wine
making. Everything produced by Kingscote is created on site, with much
of the process done by hand, by expert wine makers – the grapes are
even taken to the presses using traditional 12kg baskets, which keeps
them in pristine condition, ready to make excellent Sussex wine, both
sparkling and still.
Perryhill Orchards // www.perryhillorchards.co.uk
Single variety apple juices, ciders, and perries are all made at Perryhill
Orchards, all to high standards and all with a deliciously unique taste. In
the juice department there is the crisp sharpness of the James Grieve
variety all the way down to the pure honey sweetness of the Russet. In
between you’ll find Golden Delicious, Jonagold, and Discovery, as well as
a whole host of other gorgeous varieties. The orchard’s farm shop offers
free tastings, so you can pick your perfect flavour before purchasing
some to take home. For cider, there are three types made by the orchard
to savour: sweet, medium, and dry scrumpy, as well as 20 draught and
35 bottled varieties from elsewhere.
Prince & Sons // www.princeandsonstea.com
Could tea, the most British of all drinks, be enjoyed on a hot summer’s
day? And could Prince & Sons’ Sussex twist to the nation’s favourite
beverage be the ultimate in distinctive, unique, and satisfying flavour?
Perhaps so! Simon and Kate Prince have worked hard to produce
superb blends including caramel vanilla rooibos, English breakfast, and
lemongrass and lime. They do say that a hot drink on a hot day is the
best way to keep cool…
