charity Race for Life Cancer Research UK is urging women and girls from across the UK to gather their friends and family together and join the biggest fight against cancer this summer by taking part in Race for Life 2015 in partnership with Tesco. Whatever age or fitness level, women can walk, jog or run 5k at almost 300 Race for Life events across the UK, including Brighton, Eastbourne, Horsham and many more across Sussex. Since it began in 1994, more than 7 million participants have taken part in Race for Life raising over £513 million to fund Cancer Research UK’s vital work. www.raceforlife.org Autism Sussex Autism Sussex is a charity which exists to enable people with an autistic spectrum condition to receive the help and specialist support services they and their families need. They fulfil their mission by providing personalised support services which produce measurable, positive outcomes for those who use them and better long term value for money to those who fund them. Whatever your circumstances – whether you are working, a student, or retired – Autism Sussex needs your help and has volunteering opportunities to suit everyone. From supporting children and adults with autism in groups to helping at regular coffee mornings for parents, assisting with day trips, siblings groups or a weekly shift in one of their charity shops, there’s plenty you can do to improve the lives of people affected by autism. www.autismsussex.org.uk Action Medical Research Action Medical Research believes that the diseases that devastate the lives of so many of our children can be beaten. They have been funding medical breakthroughs since 1952 like the first polio vaccines in the UK, ultrasound in pregnancy and the rubella vaccine – helping to save thousands of children’s lives and change many more. There’s so much you can do as a volunteer for Action. Join a fundraising group or start your own, visit a school to inspire fundraising or give a talk as part of their Speaker Ambassador Programme. You can even ‘microvolunteer’, giving as little of 60 seconds of your time to make a huge impact. www.action.org.uk Chestnut Tree House Chestnut Tree House is the only children’s hospice in East and West Sussex and cares for 300 children and young adults from 0-19 years of age with progressive life-limiting conditions from Sussex and South East Hampshire. They support entire families following diagnosis through the whole disease process, and offer information, advice emergency and end of life care, and bereavement support. There are lots of ways you can get involved with volunteering at Chestnut Tree House. Help in their gardens or help keep one of the many rooms in the house clean and tidy. Even if you only have a few hours to spare, it can make a big difference to the patients and their families. www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk 84 For information on volunteering and more opportunities available, visit www.volunteersweek.org / @ www.volunteering.org.uk @NCVOvolunteers #volunteersweek
