3. The British Lion, Folkestone 4. The Coastguard, St Margaret’s Bay The British Lion on Folkestone’s coast is thought to be the oldest public house in the whole town, and with its cosy interior and picture-perfect cottage look, it’s not hard to believe that claim. Inside there is an area set aside specifically for food so that diners can enjoy their meals, but as well as that there is a fabulous bar staffed by friendly, knowledgeable locals. There is even a small outside area which is a joy to use in the good weather. Dating back more than 300 years, The Coastguard in St Margaret's Bay near Dover boasts panoramic sea views across the small bay. The Coastguard’s new look is inspired by maritime heritage, with red and white lighthouse-style pub fascia and signwriting, complete with boat-shaped planters and lifebuoys as decoration. The interior of the pub has also been completely refurbished, repainted in contemporary colours with a new fireplace installed. A new menu has been introduced featuring light bites and traditional main meals, with seafood a speciality. www.thecoastguard.co.uk 43
