Stories In The Dark // until 19 Jun
You’ve Got A Friend // 3 May
Using rare, original
magic lantern
machines and
beautiful Victorian
slides, this is a
unique exhibition
by artists creating
new work
especially for The
Beaney.
The magic
lantern is a
projection device
invented in the
17th century. The
machines used the light of candles and oil lamps to produce shows that
would take your breath away as you saw projected moving images for the
very first time. These intricate machines were often used by magicians and
conjurers to create spellbinding tales of ghosts and spirits in the darkness
of the projection room.
For this exhibition, nine selected artists are using material from The
Beaney’s unique collections, and the magic lantern itself, as a starting point
to create brand new exciting works.

Into The West // 1 May
Imagine a glorious
white horse
comes out of a
sea-mist and into
your troubled life.
Imagine trying to
keep her on the
14th floor of a
Dublin tower
block. Now
imagine the police

your only escape
is to ride into the

Beginning in
the tower blocks on the outskirts of Dublin, where two Traveller children
are living with their widowed father, the play tells the story of the magical
white horse that appears in their lives, brought to them by their grandpa
who still travels the land and follows the old ways. And there begins a series
of comical and heart-breaking adventures which culminate in a wild ride
across Ireland to escape from the police and their troubled past.
Into The West spent over eight years travelling the world, receiving
rave reviews, from sell-out performances in New York to winning the Samuel
Beckett Award for Best Children’s Production at the Dublin International
