DAYSOUT
TURNER CONTEMPORARY
What happens when art and risk collide?
This autumn, see artists leap into the void, abandon control and push art to the
limit as creative risk-taking comes under the spotlight at Turner Contemporary.
Yoko Ono
Marina Abramovic
In the first major UK exhibition to explore risk in
art, visitors to the Margate gallery will experience
how artists have intentionally embraced the
unpredictable and uncontrollable, from chance
procedures to political risk; from the power of
natural forces to the culture of risk management.
Creating any art involves a leap of faith, and
throughout the last century artists have put
themselves at risk and challenged viewers,
reflecting on what risk means in our society and
daily lives. Now it’s your turn to enter the gallery,
at your own Risk.
Walk into a physical, audio, intellectual and
emotional unknown as the Margate gallery
presents more than 70 pivotal works from the
mid-20th century to the present day by major
international artists including Marina Abramovic,
Yves Klein, Marcel Duchamp, Gerhard Richter,
Carsten Höller, Yoko Ono, Chim Pom and Ai
Weiwei.
Artist Francis Alÿs runs into the eye of a tornado;
Bas Jan Ader sails out to sea in search of the
miraculous to tragically never return; ORLAN
undergoes plastic surgery; Marina Abramovic’s
points a bow and arrow at her own heart; Pedro
Reyes creates musical instruments out of firearms
and Ruth Proctor freefalls in the gallery…
Risk runs from 10th October 2015 to 17th January
2016.
The exhibition is accompanied by a series of
events throughout the autumn. Highlights include
an opening day celebration with performances,
workshops and screenings (10th October, 11am6pm), an extract of Jasmin Vardimon Company
and Turner Contemporary's astonishing Maze
performance (26th October – 1st November),
and a cinema series of Risk related films such as
James Bond: Spectre and Marina Abramovic:
The Artist is Present at Canterbury’s Curzon
Cinema (18th October – 10th January).
