HALLOWEEN kentish Halloween Haunts IF THERE IS ONE THING THAT OCTOBER IS KNOWN FOR (APART FROM THE CLOCKS GOING BACK GIVING US AN EXTRA HOUR IN BED – HOORAY!), IT’S HALLOWEEN. 31ST OCTOBER HAS LONG BEEN A CELEBRATION OF THE GHOULISH AND THE GHOSTLY. THE TRADITION DATES BACK AROUND 2,000 YEARS AND ITS ORIGINS CAN BE FOUND IN THE OLD CELTIC FESTIVAL OF SAMHAIN, WHICH CELEBRATED THE END OF THE HARVEST PERIOD. THE GAELIC PEOPLE BELIEVED THAT IF THE CROPS WEREN’T HARVESTED ON TIME, THEN THE DEAD WOULD COME BACK TO LIFE TO DESTROY WHAT WAS LEFT, AND WREAK HAVOC OVER THE EARTH. THAT’S WHY, IF HALLOWEEN IS YOUR KIND OF HOLIDAY, YOU’RE IN GRUESOME LUCK – THERE ARE PLENTY OF BLOOD CURDLING EVENTS TAKING PLACE ACROSS THE COUNTY TO GIVE YOU A SCARE – SO BEWARE (AND HAVE FUN)! Broadwitch Hauntfest Halloween at the Powell-Cotton Museum Southfleet // 16 Oct – 1 Nov National Scar Award winner Broadwitch Hauntfest returns this Halloween with not one but two brand new haunts to satisfy its patrons’ quest for gore. MassAcre is a new corn maze that will terrorize you to your very core. The inhabitants of MassAcre Farm love to have visitors, they always put on a welcome feast; the only drawback is the guests are the ones on the menu! The Edge, the second of the new attractions for 2015, will take you to a dark netherworld where vampires will hunt you down so they can suck the lifeblood from you. Deep within the catacombs, the living dead are waiting to ensnare you and keep you entombed with them forever. The Spooky Castle, Thirteen and the National Scar award-winning Biometrix are the remaining three haunts that will both scare and enthral you. Not forgetting the daytime attractions for younger guests! www.broadwitchhauntfest.co.uk Birchington // 26 Oct – 30 Oct This Halloween at the Powell-Cotton Museum you and your family will travel to the haunt of the White Lady. Before your journey begins you will create and decorate a lantern to light your way in dark places. With your willow and paper lanterns you will then trek in the footsteps of Percy Powell-Cotton to the dreaded tower hidden amongst the trees in the northern woodland of Quex Park. At this ill-fated location you will hear the spine-tingling tale of an ancient tomb, a terrible curse and discover the identity of the white lady… Tickets must be booked in advance. www.quexpark.co.uk/events/halloween 111
