Courtesy the Artist and Victoria Miro, London. © Grayson Perry Grayson Perry: Provincial Punk (only in Margate) – until 13th September s A selection of Grayson Perry’ ceramics and other artworks including tapestries, prints, bronze and iron sculpture. Working in traditional media, he is interested in how each historic category of object accrues intellectual and emotional baggage over time. Perry is a great chronicler of contemporary life, drawing us in to his exquisitely crafted works with beauty, wit, sentiment and nostalgia, whilst at the same time exploring issues within society and culture that instigate fear, uncertainty and anger. www.turnercontemporary.org Comedy Gigs at Ramsgate Music Hall – until end July An intimate venue with a capacity of 125, this is potentially one of the best sounding small venues in the country. From 18th June to 30th July every Thursday evening enjoy comedy gigs, starting with Scott Capurro, the world renowned San Franciscan comic, to Christian Steel performing ‘Gloom Hunter’. Previews Edinburgh Festival. Also new at this venue ‘Spoken Word Performances’, live readings accompanied by music and film, where you can meet the authors face to face and hear them deliver exacts from their new books, includes Ian David Noakes, Professor Tim Crook, Will Smith, George Chittenden and India Russel. Tuesday nights from 30th June to 28th July. www.ramsgatemusichall.com Skagate Margate (NEW EVENT) – 3rd to 5th July Various venues around Margate Old Town A new event in Margate being described as the ‘Original 60’s Ska, Reggae and Soul Festival’, which celebrates the historical connection of Margate to the British Skinhead subculture and its continued relationship with the original late 50's Jamaican music genre known as Ska. www.skagate.com Ramsgate Seaside Fair – 4th and 5th July A new and exciting event for Ramsgate including music, food, drink and local crafts from skilled artisans. 10am to 5pm. Free entry. www.ramsgateseasidefair.uk Summer Prom – 5th July Powell-Cotton Museum, Quex House and Gardens, Birchington Enjoy a summer evening prom and picnic event in the beautiful surroundings of Quex Gardens, including a full programme of popular and classical music, performed by The Kent Concert Orchestra conducted by John Perkins and featuring soprano, Margaret Threadgold. www.quexmuseum.org Ramsgate Week, Royal Harbour – 26th July to 2nd August Ramsgate Royal Harbour, the only one in the country, plays host to a full programme of racing and is recognised as the friendly regatta and an alternative to Cowes Week. Racing takes place between 26th and 31st July. www.ramsgateweek.com RIBA Sandcastle Competition, Margate Main Sands – 25th July The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) bring their sandcastle Challenge to Margate Main Sands. Whether it is for a bit of fun or as a skilled artist come along and have a go. www.architecture.com Summer Repertory Season – 30th July to 23rd August Sarah Thorne Theatre Company, Broadstairs Now in its 10th year, the only one in the South East opening with “Mrs Warrens Profession” by Bernard Shaw. www.sarahthorne-theatrecompany.co.uk Margate Soul Weekend Festival – 31st July to 2nd August Another big weekend of soulful jazz and carnival vibes with some of the best live and DJ entertainment from across the globe in various venues around the Old Town. Headlining Sunday afternoon global legend Roy Ayers with guest DJ’s over the weekend Norman Jay and Joey Negro. Sunday afternoon sees Margate’s colourful carnival parade take place along the seafront. www.margatesoulweekend.co.uk And looking forward to August we will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Broadstairs Folk Week (7th-14th) and three new events Ramsgate Sprint Revival (15th-16th), Play Margate (21st-23rd) and Art Car Boot Fair (30th), Margate.
