FOOD+DRINK THE EATERY at Fenwick SINCE REOPENING AT THE END OF 2014, THE EATERY AT FENWICK HAS TRULY EMBRACED ITS COOL, CLEAN MAKEOVER AND IS READY TO IMPRESS WITH A CLASSIC HOME COOKED BRITISH MENU OVERFLOWING WITH LOCAL KENTISH PRODUCE. by Samantha G With its sharp lines, high ceilings, industrial lighting and wooden features, there's a hint of Manhattan loft about the cool, but cosy dining space at The Eatery – apt really, seeing as it's well positioned on the second floor of the much-loved Fenwick department store in the heart of Canterbury. However, don't be fooled; a substandard shop café this is not. Offering quirky, homely, bistro dining at its best, The Eatery celebrates the best of Kentish food with a classic British menu. Having made our way to our corner booth, it was evident that this foodie spot had already become a firm favourite amongst the Canterbury shoppers. A perusal of the new menu and a quick peek at the neighbouring tables confirmed our hopes that the food would live up to our newly formed expectations. The menu itself is broken into easy sections including Start the Day, under which you'll find all-day breakfast options including the popular English breakfast, sourced entirely from local Kentish producers; Hot Bites, comprising of classics such as Fenwick rarebit; Crisp and Fresh proffering salad and fish options; and Gourmet Burgers, from which my dining companion and I ordered the slow-cooked pulled pork burger and free-range chicken burger. As a heaving brioche bun arrived in front of each of us, heaped respectively with sweet tangy pulled pork and succulent grilled chicken breast, complimented by a delicious onion chutney, we certainly weren't disappointed. Homemade coleslaw, a crisp salad and hand-cut triple-cooked chips – fluffy, crisp and overflowing from the metal chip buckets – accompanied both dishes. Alongside the food, there's a great drink selection including coffees, teas, chilled juices, Kentish beers and Kissing Tree wines, from which to enjoy a tipple or two. Aside from its selection of hot and cold snacks, plus mains, The Eatery boasts a great selection of Naughty but Nice cakes and pastries including fresh cupcakes (made locally), and a dessert of the day. Well it would be rude not to, right? The oozing warm chocolate brownie soon appeared in front of us, served up by the friendly and courteous waiting staff; and it was good. Really good. Moist, fudgy gooeyness with heaps 49 of white chocolate chips and cream, it was a great end to a great lunch. Plentiful portions, well-cooked, well-presented fresh quality produce (and reasonably priced too), The Eatery is certainly riding high. In fact, the menu ranges in cost from a mere few pounds for breakfast options and sandwiches to a twocourse Sunday lunch for just £10. Ensure you make The Eatery top of your shopping list next time you're in town! Open Mon-Sat, 9am-5pm; and Sun, 11am-4pm.
