NOT BECAUSE IT CAN’T BE DEFINED (OFTEN FINE ART IS THE TERM USED TO DESCRIBE ART THAT IS MADE PURELY FOR ITS AESTHETIC APPEAL – THE EPITOME OF ART FOR ART’S SAKE – RATHER THAN FOR ANY FUNCTIONAL VALUE), BUT BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY VARIATIONS OF IT. FINE ART CAN BE PAINTING, SCULPTURE, TEXTILES, PRINT, DRAWING, PHOTOGRAPHY, DÉCOLLAGE, FOUND ART, AND MANY MORE MEDIA BESIDES. BUY WHY TRY TO DEFINE FINE ART WHEN ITS VERY FORM ASKS THAT IT SIMPLY BE ENJOYED? THE FOLLOWING SAMPLING OF KENT-BASED ARTISTS WHO SPECIALISE IN FINE ART SHOULD GIVE YOU A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT. SCULPTURE CJ Munn and André Masters are award-winning sculptors and lifecasters. Using plaster, bronze, copper, clay, leather, and cold cast materials, they are able to produce the most exquisite pieces of art. They won the title of International Rising Star Award at last year’s 3D Print Show and the piece pictured was shown in London at the Business Design Centre, and at the Louvre in Paris! This piece is called Icarus had a Sister and is over 2.2 metres wide. It is made with a combination of traditional life casting and sculpting techniques combined with state of the art digital modelling and 3D printing (each of the 200 feathers in the wings were individually 3D printed, coated in copper and hand patinated). It’s made from c ast white onyx with crushed pearl dust in resin (the body and feet); cast slate with cold cast copper and iron (the plinth); and Veroplastic with real copper veneer (the wings). www.mastersandmunn.co.uk PAINTING Beatrice Cloake has been immersed in art her entire life – born in France, her father was a master in stained glass windows, and she was surrounded by their specific and captivating beauty.
