fine art
BY LISAMARIE LAMB
TRYING TO PIN DOWN EXACTLY WHAT THE TERM ‘FINE ART’ MEANS, EXACTLY WHAT SORT OF ART IT
CONSTITUTES, IS DIFFICULT. NOT BECAUSE IT CAN’T BE DEFINED (OFTEN FINE ART IS THE TERM USED
TO DESCRIBE ART THAT IS MADE PURELY FOR ITS AESTHETIC APPEAL – THE EPITOME OF ART FOR ART’S
SAKE – RATHER THAN FOR ANY FUNCTIONAL VALUE), BUT BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY VARIATIONS
OF IT. FINE ART CAN BE PAINTING, SCULPTURE, TEXTILES, PRINT, DRAWING, PHOTOGRAPHY, DÉCOLLAGE,
FOUND ART, AND MANY MORE MEDIA BESIDES.
BUY WHY TRY TO DEFINE FINE ART WHEN ITS VERY FORM ASKS THAT IT SIMPLY BE ENJOYED? THE
FOLLOWING SAMPLING OF KENT-BASED ARTISTS WHO SPECIALISE IN FINE ART SHOULD GIVE YOU A
GOOD IDEA OF WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT.
SCULPTURE
CJ Munn and André Masters are award-winning sculptors
and lifecasters. Using plaster, bronze, copper, clay, leather,
and cold cast materials, they are able to produce the
most exquisite pieces of art. They won the title of
International Rising Star Award at last year’s 3D Print
Show and the piece pictured was shown in London at
the Business Design Centre, and at the Louvre in Paris!
This piece is called Icarus had a Sister and is over 2.2
metres wide. It is made with a combination of traditional
life casting and sculpting techniques combined with state
of the art digital modelling and 3D printing (each of the
200 feathers in the wings were individually 3D printed,
coated in copper and hand patinated). It’s made from
c ast white onyx with crushed pearl dust in resin (the body
and feet); cast slate with cold cast copper and iron (the
plinth); and Veroplastic with real copper veneer (the wings).

eight years old, and since then she has been making
beautiful art.
