BE INSPIRED:
get fit in kent
It’s the new year, and one of your resolutions is to get fit. But how exactly do you motivate yourself
to get going? One of the best ways is to find a purpose for your exercising. For some, that purpose
might be to reach a weight loss goal or to win a bet. However, for others, the best reason for
training and getting fit is charity. What better incentive do you need to get on the treadmill, than
to take on one of Kent's exciting charity events?
Chilli Dip Cold Water Swim // 7 Feb
Walk This Way // 2 May
The Walk This Way challenge is a 50k route from Demelza’s site in
Sittingbourne to its second site in Eltham – or vice versa. The fun part of
this walk is that you will meet those doing the opposite walk as you go
along, and because of the exclusive breathable t-shirt that you will receive
when you sign up to take part, you’ll easily be able to spot fellow charity
walkers. As an added incentive (as if making a load of money for a worthwhile
charity isn't enough), you can look forward to a glass of something bubbly
at the end...
Registration costs £25 (minimum sponsorship of £500).
Visit www.demelza.org.uk for more information, plus details on how to
sign up.
Tour de Kent // 3 & 4 May
How brave are you when it comes to the cold? Do you like a bracing dip
on a cold day? Even if you don’t, when it comes to the chYps Children’s
Hospice Chilli Dip at St Julian’s outdoor pool, it is worth making the effort,
as all money raised will go to a good cause. And once complete, you will
receive a certificate and a bowl of warming chilli.
Registration costs £15. To sign up, visit www.chyps.org or call Hayley
Brown on 01322 626506.
Kent is a beautiful county, so when you have the
opportunity to not only explore some of its more
scenic routes, but also raise money for charity
(in this case Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and
Take Heart Mercy Mission) then why not take it?
And when you can ride along with Gillingham FC
stars and enjoy live music, food, and entertainment
at Priestfield Stadium, it’s even better!
Registration cost TBC. For more information on the event, or to book
your place, visit www.tourdekent.co.uk.
Glow Night Run // 27 Mar
This 5km run (or jog, or walk – whatever you feel most comfortable doing)
is an evening event, but don’t worry, you won’t lose your way or trip over
any errant fallen branches because you will be wearing the most eyecatching fluorescent clothing you possibly can! With music, lighting, and
a fun party atmosphere in Maidstone's Mote Park, this event organised by
chYps Children’s Hospice is not to be missed.
Registration costs £15. To sign up, visit www.chyps.org or call Hayley
Brown on 01322 626506.
Demelza 101 // 12-14 Jun
Pedal for a Purpose // 19 Apr
The Demelza House 101 Challenge is so called because it takes 100 intrepid
trekkers and unites them in one good cause: raising money for Demelza
House. These plucky 100 have a definite challenge ahead of them, as their
goal is to reach the top of Ben Nevis – a whopping 1,343 metres above
sea level.
Registration costs £100 (minimum sponsorship £900). For further
details or to book your place, visit
www.demelza.org.uk or call Emma Austen on 07920 151766.
Starting and ending at Demelza House’s Sittingbourne site, participants
can choose from three different routes (depending on their bike riding
confidence), and enjoy cycling through some of the most picturesque little
villages in Kent – all for a great cause.
The Family Route (17 miles) costs £15 per adult and £5 per child; the
Classic Route (52 miles) £20; and the Epic Route (103 miles) £30. To
register, visit www.demelza.org.uk.
