CHARITY
YOUNG TRIATHLETE RAISES HUNDREDS FOR DEMELZA
An eight-year-old boy who asked
for donations to his fundraising
cause instead of birthday
presents has completed his first
triathlon.
Max Robinson Long, from
Westerham, took part in the
event at Hever Castle on
Saturday 27th September.
He joined in with a 100m
swim in the castle’s lake, a 4k
bike ride and a 1.3k run around
the grounds, which he completed
in 46 minutes 28 seconds.
The New Beacon School
pupil, who decided to take on
the challenge to support Demelza
Hospice Care for Children, has so far raised more than £1,120.
The event was part of the Castle Triathlon Series and took place a few
days after he celebrated his eighth birthday. He had asked his friends and
family for donations towards his sponsorship instead of presents.
Max’s auntie, Carol Robinson, who helped her nephew sign up to the
fundraiser, said: “Max has made us all incredibly proud.
“Not only is he an amazing and wonderful young man who has a heart
of gold, he is now and forever a triathlete.
“He absolutely loved it and cannot wait to do more.”
There’s still time to sponsor Max at www.justgiving.com/Carol-JaneRobinson1.

HUNDREDS WALK INTO THE SUNSET AT TWILIGHT WALK FOR
ELLENORLIONS HOSPICES
The streets of Gravesend were illuminated with
dazzling pink lights and laughter as hundreds
put their best foot forward at the EllenorLions
Hospices Twilight Walk.
More than 350 people joined celebrity
patron, Cheryl Fergison, at the Cyclopark on
Friday 19th September for the charity’ reinvented
s
annual sponsored walk.
Giggles resounded around the venue as
men, women and children took part in a Zumba
warm-up with local instructor, Natasha
McDiarmid, before setting off for their 8km walk.
As they strolled into the sunset, all were
united in their goal to raise as much money for
local hospice care for seriously ill children and
adults and their families.
They were cheered along by the Mayor of
Gravesham, Cllr John Caller, who is supporting
EllenorLions Hospices this year, and former
EastEnders actress, Cheryl, who is currently
starring in Big School.
Walkers were treated to soup and Taywell
Ice Creams along the way, and each received a
goody bag for their efforts.
Brenda Cook from Gravesend walked in
memory of her daughter Maisie, who was cared
for by chYps, the charity's children's hospice at
home service. She said: “It was such a lovely
event. We will definitely be walking again as a
family next year.”
Every year EllenorLions Hospices must
raise over £6 million pounds to be able to pr
ovide
vital care for seriously adults and children in their
place of choice.

MOVEMBER 2014
The Movember Foundation is the leading global
organisation committed to changing the face of
men’s health. It achieves this by challenging men
to grow moustaches during Movember (the
month formerly known as November), to spark
conversation and raise funds for prostate cancer,
testicular cancer, and mental health problems.
Since Movember’s humble beginnings in
2003 in Melbourne, Australia, when 30 men grew
moustaches, Movember has become a truly
global movement, inspiring more than 4 million
men and women to participate across 21
countries. The Movember community has raised
over £345 million, and has funded more than
800 programmes to date.
Men (also known as Mo Bros) start their
challenge on November 1st clean-shaven and
grow their moustaches for 30 days, while asking
friends, family and colleagues to donate to their
moustache-growing efforts.
However, Movember’s not just for men.
Women who support men’s health, known as
165
Mo Sistas, are an important part of Movember’s
success. They get involved in the same way as
men, except they don’t need to grow a
moustache. They sign up, start a team, and
recruit the men in their lives to participate, donate,
fundraise, and plan events.
Meaningful strides have been taken towar s
d
achieving Movember's goals, but there is more
work to be done. Each of the causes it supports
remains in desperate need of further funding,
and continue to be issues that men are often
uncomfortable discussing. It is committed to
raising vital funds and awareness to improve the
lives of men and their families. Sign up at
www.movember.com to join the movement and
have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s
health.
