EVENTS KentEvents Beyond the View: Reframing the Sunbeam Photographic Collection Jul – 23 Aug August Adventures // Tues-Fri throughout Aug Percy Powell-Cotton faced some pitfalls and perils during his 50 years of exploring, and the team at Quex has been studying his diaries in order to pass on skills that can aid survival in your next adventure. During August Adventures, you will learn how to identify animals by the marks they leave behind, how to cross a river, how to survive encounters with potentially dangerous animals and how to safely collect drinking water. Finally, you will take a journey through the garden where you will test these skills before receiving your certificate of adventuring. 11am-2.30pm. Price: Adults £3.50, Children £2.50. (Price includes garden admission only). Quex Park, Park Lane, Birchington CT7 0BH www.quexmuseum.org / 01843 842168 Before package holidays and jetting off on an aeroplane became the typical family holiday, British families would visit Margate for their summer excursion. In the 1950s and 60s, the Isle of Thanet was ‘the place’ to go to visit the beautiful sandy beaches, arcades and where you could have your photograph taken by the Sunbeam Photographic Company. The South East Archive of Seaside (SEAS) Photography has now made it possible to revisit those fond seaside memories at its latest exhibition, Beyond the View: Reframing the Sunbeam Photographic Collection, at Canterbury Christ Church University’s Sidney Cooper Gallery. The exhibition will show more than 700 evocative images taken by Sunbeam, plus examples from internationally regarded photographers, John Hinde and Tony Ray Jones, who visited East Kent in the 1960s. Tues-Fri, 10.30am-5pm; Sat, 11.30am-5pm. Price: Free admission.
