NEWS TWO STUDENTS FROM BETHANY SCHOOL MEET WITH THE ROYAL SEAL OF APPROVAL Anna Burnham stamp portrait CLAUDIA SCHIFFER AND RODENSTOCK PRESENT THEIR VERY FIRST COLLECTION, CLAUDIA SCHIFFER BY RODENSTOCK Her Majesty the Queen was sufficiently impressed with a portrait of herself –created with the use of 4,600 stamps – to send a letter of congratulations to the Year 13 ‘A’ Level artist Anna Burnham who produced it. recently Piers Muiry, also studying ‘A’ level had a portrait of his grandfather accepted by the highly prestigious Royal Academy Summer Online exhibition for schools, one of only 36 to make the final exhibition from a country wide entry of 1,280 pieces. Head of Art, Peter Norgrove said: Piers Muiry portrait “While it is clearly a bonus for the individuals concerned to have their work set before a wider audience, more importantly it underlines the creativity and enthusiasm of our pupils and helps to inspire the younger artists coming up through the school.” Headmaster, Francie Healy added: “I am immensely proud of both Anna and Piers who are both exceptional artists and incredibly nice people. KENT WINNER OF NATIONAL DIVINE POETRY COMPETITION 2014 As I neared, a figure came into focus. My breath caught in my throat and my eyes widened, For I had come all this way and he is here, Actually here. (extract from Sophie Turner’s Poem “If I met a cocoa farmer”) Divine Chocolate and Christian Aid are delighted to announce the winners of this year’s national Divine Poetry Competition. Award-winning children’s author Philip Ardagh helped select the poems from amongst 1,000 entries which best captured the theme “If I met a cocoa farmer”. There are three age groups and this year the winner in the 7-11 years old category was Sophie Turner from Maidstone. As always the topic of chocolate stimulated thousands of budding poets to wax lyrical about chocolate, something they clearly love, and the Fairtrade focus produced more reflective thoughts and ideas. Philip Ardagh said: “I was delighted to be asked to judge this year’s National Divine Poetry Competition, combining two of my favourite things: poetry and chocolate; and with Divine combining chocolate with Fairtrade we were onto a winner from the start! There were funny poems, sad poems and thought-provoking poems. Some were all three but we were left with a lasting impression of competition entrants who’d thrown themselves wholeheartedly into the project.” Charlotte Borger, communications director at Divine Chocolate adds: “Our theme this year had the desired effect of making people think about where our favourite treat comes from and the hard work that goes into each chocolate bar we enjoy.
