In the way of mains, the fillet of beef took my fancy. Cooked to perfection, the quality cut was melt-in-the-mouth tender, served on bed of mushrooms with a classic peppercorn sauce, and quite possibly the tastiest hand cut chips I have ever encountered. Meanwhile, a hearty panroasted rump of English lamb was my guest's selection, complimented by delicious braised red cabbage, Jerusalem artichokes, pea shoots and crisp, almond-crusted potatoes. At this point, a third course should've been the last thing on my mind, but when desserts acalling, who am I to ignore it? So, in the name of work, I ordered my all-time favourite – the custardy triumph that is the French-inspired Crème brûlée. After a delicious end to an exceptional sitting, it was a drink or two in the bar, before retiring to our spectacular room for the evening. As I'm sure most would agree, when the rooms are as distinctive as they are here, it is where most visitors opt to spend their time. However a Jacuzzi dip and restful sleep later, we were back in the bar for our freshly cooked English breakfast and wake-up coffee. The ideal start to the day, and perfect end to our trip. If you're looking for somewhere truly unique and full of character, Who'd A Thought It indisputably ticks all of the boxes and more you didn't even know existed. In keeping with its name, each element of our stay was just as unpredictable and intriguing as the next, which refreshingly allows guests to return again and again to a new experience each time – provided you book a different themed room, of course. It's this such exclusivity that owner Joe had in mind when designing his elaborate creations. Pioneers of their trade, Who'd A Thought It has achieved just what it set out to do by staying true to form. And with expansion and growth at the forefront, it will undoubtedly continue to thrive in 2014. For one, we will certainly be 117 back; I mean, it's not often you find yourselves talking about an overnight stay for days to come, but with this Kent-based wonder, we did just that. And that can only be a good thing. Headcorn Road Grafty Green Nr Lenham ME17 2AR 01622 858951 www.whodathoughtit.com
