Set in the 1950s, the series was filmed on location in Pluckley, Tenterden Folkestone. The film tells the story of young Pip, a good natured orphan who lives with kind blacksmith Joe Gargery and his often abusive wife. Pip’ fortunes appear to change when a recluse named Miss Havisham s arrives in his life, and eventually a mysterious benefactor, who pays for him to travel to London and learn to be a gentleman in the hope of him achieving his 'great expectations'. Dickens based Satis House, the home of Miss Havisham, on Restoration House in Rochester. Featured several times throughout the film, some of the most dramatic scenes in the story take place within its walls. The River Medway and the adjacent St Mary’s Marshes also feature.
