Directed by: David Lean
Written by: Charles Dickens (novel) and
(adaptation)
Starring: John Mills, Valerie Hobson,
Bernard Miles and Martita Hunt
Kent locations used: St Mary’s Marshes,
Medway and Restoration House
Great Expectations was the first of David Lean’s two adaptations of Dickens’
classic novels. The film tells the story of young Pip, a good natured orphan
who lives with kind blacksmith Joe Gargery and his often abusive wife.
Pip’ fortunes appear to change when a recluse named Miss Havisham
s
arrives in his life, and eventually a mysterious benefactor, who pays for him
to travel to London and learn to be a gentleman in the hope of him achieving
his 'great expectations'.
Dickens based Satis House, the home of Miss Havisham, on Restoration
House in Rochester. Featured several times throughout the film, some of
the most dramatic scenes in the story take place within its walls. The River
Medway and the adjacent St Mary’s Marshes also feature.
Four adaptations of Great Expectations have been made, each boasting
scenes filmed in Kent. Shots from the most recent version (2012) are pictured
here on location in Oare.
