announces 2014 spring events programme
FOLLOWING A MAJOR MILESTONE YEAR FOR TURNER CONTEMPORARY IN 2013 IN
WHICH THE MARGATE GALLERY WELCOMED ITS ONE MILLIONTH VISITOR IN JUST OVER
TWO YEARS, TURNER CONTEMPORARY BEGINS 2014 WITH AN EXCITING SPRING
PROGRAMME. FIRST UP, HERE ARE FEBRUARY'S HIGHLIGHTS TO KICK START YOUR YEAR.
Family Workshop: Colour Construction
2 & 16 February
Explore colour and structure in this family
workshop, whereby attendees will get crafty to
make sculptures that move in the wind. The
artworks will then be brought back to the
community's Summer of Colour celebration on
24th May.
1-4pm. £3 per child/free for adults, under 3s and
families living in CT9.
Writer’s Squad
8 February
Writer’s Squad is open to all enthusiastic young
writers aged between 13-17, offering a brilliant
opportunity to develop new skills and meet new
people. By exploring a range of creative writing,
from poetry and playwriting to lyrics to flash
fiction, the Writer's Squad introduces young
writers to a variety of styles inspired by the gallery's
exhibitions.
11:30am. Free admission.
Family Workshop: Paint
9 & 23 February
Gather the family and drop into this wonderful
workshop, during which everyone w ill have the
chance to make large-scale collaborative paintings
using wacky paint machines and huge canvasses.
1-4pm. £3 per child/free for adults, under 3s and
families living in CT9.
Talk: Dr Alison Rowley on Frankenthaler
13 February
Learn more about Helen Frankenthaler as a
painter who created ‘something new in terms of
nature’ at this talk given by Dr Alison Rowley, a
Reader in Cultural Theory at the University of
Huddersfield.
3pm. £6/£5 concessions.
Family Workshop: Colours & Shapes
19 February
Create fabulous abstract artworks containing
colours and shapes from our local environment
in the style of Helen Frankenthaler.
1-4pm. £3 per child/free for adults, under 3s and
families living in CT9.
Late Night Live
21 February
A late night opening celebrating painting and
Margate’s GEEK gaming festival, which takes
place between 21-23 February 2014. Turner
Contemporary's café is also open late, serving
hot food and drinks to accompany your time at
the gallery.
6-9pm. Free admission.
Art on Screen: Anja Kirschner and David Panos
26 February
Film collaborators Anja Kirschner and David Panos
take part in this new monthly series of films made
by artists, with their selection of short movies.
The pairing's films investigate historical events
or near futures; they experiment with technique
and approach to build unusual narratives,
subverting familiar cinematic norms.
