NEWS WAR AND PEACE REVIVAL CONFIRMS DATES FOR 2014 The greatest military show on earth is back at Folkestone Racecourse this summer and we can confirm the dates for your diary are 16th-20th July 2014. 2014 is a significant year with the commemoration of the centenary of WWI, the 75th anniversary of the start of WWII and the 70th anniversaries of both D-Day and Arnhem. And what's more, the organisers of The War and Peace Revival have lots of exciting events planned to recognise these historical moments. Why should we remember the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WWI? By the end of the First World War, very few people remained unaffected. Locally, Folkestone was probably the closest British town to the Western Front, with locals able to hear the sound of heavy artillery, and on a clear night, see the flashes from the guns. Folkestone took in boatloads of refugees from Belgium, and later on up to 40,000 Canadian troops used the town as their main embarkation port. The first bomb to fall in England fell on Christmas Eve near Dover Castle, while Folkestone Racecourse – new home to The War and Peace Revival – and its surrounding areas were used as a training location, with thousands of Canadian soldiers arriving at Westenhanger train station. The War and Peace Revival is a unique fiveday event in the UK. Around 100,000 visitors experienced the sights and sounds of Britain – both at war and at peace – in 2013, and an even bigger crowd is expected for 2014.
