••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• welcome I feel like it was only a few years ago that I was ringing in the New Year of the third millennium. I can’t quite believe it’s been 14 years since I toasted to 2000 with friends, family and a little too much Champagne! county’s top food & drink, fashion, days out, interiors, events and lots more. You’re sure to learn something new in our cover story: 80 intriguing facts about Kent (p102). Being from the States, I was amazed to find out Pocahontas is buried in Gravesend! Though welcoming 2014 isn’t quite as momentous as when we said goodbye to 1999, it’s still an exciting time. We’ll see the Winter Olympics take place in Russia in February, and the World Cup this summer in Brazil. Sky City, China, is scheduled for completion in 2014, making it the tallest building in the world. Creativity abounds in this issue, with Kent’s most notable authors featured on page 26, art deco-inspired fashion (p66), and a Kent-based company on a mission to create awe-inspiring furniture out of reclaimed aviation salvage (p115). A bit closer to home, the Channel Tunnel will celebrate its 20th anniversary, and insideKENT will not only be entering its fifth year, but will now be published monthly, starting with this very issue. If it’s food you’re after, why not try a new recipe from Chapter One’s chef patron Andy McLeish: Poached South Coast Cod with an Asian Broth (p62). Or if your New Year’s resolution includes trying new eateries, we can’t recommend The West House highly enough. Based on Biddenden’s quaint High Street, this Michelin-starred restaurant is every bit as good as you’ve heard (and if you haven’t heard yet, I just told you, so there’s no excuse to not book your table!). Personally, well, I just can’t help but set some New Year’s resolutions. You know, the usual: lose weight, spend more time with family, buy more local products, travel more, and exercise regularly. Will this be the year I stick to them (or even one)? You’ll just have to wait and see. If you don’t hear about them again, chances are I haven’t been quite as dedicated as I was on 1st January. Whether or not you’ve set your own resolutions, I hope 2014 is your healthiest, happiest and most successful year yet!
